&& how was i supposed to see this coming...
It was the first snow of the season. It was dark yet the white of the grounds made it seem light. Through the billowing gray clouds peeked out a sliver of a crescent moon. It shown down on the sixteen-year old red-head who walked the cobble-stoned path through the courtyard. Her boots made a crunch noise against the snow. Her eyes looked down, her expression quiet, lost. How was she to know how she felt? She could never really tell.
She wore a long black wool coat over a pair of dark jeans, a long-sleeved white shirt, and a dark blue knit sweater. Her hair was left down. Her long blue scarf blew about her as a gust of wind tore through the outdoor court. Her knit gloves slid over the back of a bench. She stared up at the sky again. Had she not been a prefect, being out that late would have gotten her into loads of trouble. She sighed and thought of him.
Where was her dark friend in that moment? Where was Severus Snape? She sat down on the icy bench after brushing away the stray snowflakes covering it. She stared into the blanketed earth, praying he'd magically show up before her eyes. She needed him and couldn't really explain why.

The first snow was something everyone made a fuss about. That meant it was the prefect's job to make sure everyone was in by curfew. Now, Severus Snape was seemingly alone on the grounds, stars lighting the sky and light icy droplets falling from puffy clouds. It was sickeningly perfect, and for some reason, he liked it that way. Of course, he'd rather die before admitting to his fellow slytherin that he was getting setimental over a little snowfall.
He wore the same coat that his father had given to him a good six or seven years ago. It had holes and patches in a few places. The black thing had never really fit him, but now at sixteen, he'd finally grown into it. The body type would likely be the only thing simaliar between Sev and his father. Thank goodness. A dark green scarf had been wrapped loosely around his neck, and specks of white were easily visable in his dark hair.
It was cold, but not cold enough to force him inside. Severus quite liked the quiet atmosphere out here, and the coat he had was warm enough, although it was almost time to get a new one. There was a figure sitting on a bench, and he wondered why he hadn't noticed the girl sitting there before. Perhaps it was because she so simply blended in with her surroundings? Or maybe because she was meant to be there at this moment in time?
Severus shook his head. It was rediculous. Then again, the sight of red hair made it all too apparent who the student was. Lily. Of course. Impeccable timing, as always. He walked up behind her silently, not enough snow had fallen to have him make a crunching noise in his worn boots. He placed a gloved hand on the girl's shoulder and then spoke to her, in a bit of a hushed tone. "It's past curfew, Miss Evans, shouldn't you be inside?" It was like the games they used to play as children...ah such wonderful games.

Lily's face lit up in a smile as his words came out in a hushed tone. Her eyes met his in one swift glance and she held her emerald green stare with his dark one. "I'll have you know I'm a prefect Severus Snape. I dare you to make me go inside on a night like this." She murmured playfully. It was like they were five again. Five and catching colds out in the poor weather while Tunie complained for ages about how her toes were turning to icicles. How simple a time that was.
"Would you like to join me? Sure, the bench is frozen, but it's still a place to sit." She patted the snowy spot beside her. She looked down to realize the small heap of snow beginning to pile there and she brushed it off letting the flakes make her mitten damp. "Voila, it's perfect." She smiled that beam of a smile. How could she not be happy? Her dearest friend had come to join her. Was that really all Severus was to her though? A dear friend? Lily had begun to wonder. He seemed like something much more than that.
Before she could let her thoughts wander far, Lily had to think of all the good things about her friendship with Sev. For one things, Severus knew her so well. Severus knew the little things that made Lily's mind tick. the bits and bobs that made her who she was. He'd watched her grow out of that shy, wild-spirited little thing she was as a child and into the intelligent but lost thing she'd become. Was there more than just that though? Was there a little something extra beside all those feelings of friendship? There was that ever so subtle electricity that flowed between them on a few rare occasions. How could she continually ignore that?
