NPC?

Does anyone know what an NPC is? I see this on a lot of rp sites but no one ever says what it is. Plus, it's kinda important know that I'm taking one over.  Thanks Lizzy |

I've seen it as 'Non-playable character', like the background characters that you interact with on video games?
I don't know how similar it is on these kind of rpg's but I'm guessing its similar enough...
