}}twas the night of the yule ball when a terrible thing happened. this is how it went...{{
&& this darkness plays tricks on us...
Her eyes were still damp, her heart was still cold. The words still made the taste in her mouth feel rotted and bad. How could she be so cruel? Lily sat on the floor of the dark astronomy tower. No light guided her, only a sea of scatter stars over head and a casually placed crescent moon to make the scenery look convincing.
She wore a pale violet dress. It went to about mid-calf and had a bow around the waist in black. The straps were thick and her hairs was done up the way Alice had messed with it. Her makeup was simple, just enough to make her look like she had attended an event. Ace did have a way with a wand when it came to fashion. It didn't matter now. No, now there were smudged lines down her cheeks form the tears that had welled over her mascara and eyeliner. She was a right mess and it didn't seem fair. She couldn't even remember how she and James had ended up arguing. How could she? She'd been so caught up in the fury that she couldn't keep track of her scattered thoughts. Drama could do any good girl in.
Worse yet, Lily was overwhelmed by guilt because she didn't think of James in that morbid moment. No, the only one to grace her mind's palette was Severus Snape. She thought of him and how well he looked that night. She thought of how charming he could be when he wanted. She thought of the possibilities. Had she never started dating James and had Severus and she never fought, there was such a likely chance that they would have attended that ball together that night.
She felt like a fool. She was so lonely. Her back was up against the stone wall beside the exit out onto the massive balcony for astronomy viewing. Her knees were pulled up to her chest and her arms were wrapped around her body in a highly defensive position. Her hair was pulled out of the wrap Ace had secured and she suddenly felt bad about not taking more pictures with her friends before all this. What was wrong with her? Maybe Lily was just a master at pushing people away. Maybe that was what she was really good at. She'd let her sister learn to hate her quite young so, it made sense.
Lily listened to the sound of her uneven breathing as she gulped down the choke in her throat. She tried to stop the tears but it seemed an impossible task. How could she look so strong, so perfect all the other times? How could she walk the halls of Hogwarts and never care? Now she looked pathetic and lonely. Now she looked stupid and vulnerable. Lily was beginning to hate herself for being such a drama queen. She shouldn't have ever gotten herself into these situations. She should never have let it all build up to that moment. What worse could happen on such a night?

}}the tears in your eyes, make my whole world fall apart.{{
&& these walls around us are about to crumble... stay with me, and i'll keep you safe.
Severus Snape wasn't looking forward to the yule ball. He'd put on his father's old suit, and a tie. It wasn't new, or as fancy as the other dress robes everyone else had. They couldn't exactly afford that type of want. Besides, he didn't want to go. He would see Kydrick frolicking with the werewolf. Although, he didn't care that much, it didn't thrill him. But no, that wouldn't be enough to anger him. What he truly cared about was Lily, dancing the night away in the arms of James Potter, the person he hated...no...loathed, more than anyone else.
He'd gone, and done just that, watching the girl he loved in the arms of another man. If he closed his eyes, he could imagine that it was him, spending so much time with his Lily. Isn't that what she had said before? That he was hers? Then why couldn't it be the other way around too? They belonged to each other, in friendship at least. Pardon him for constantly longing for more.
Then, something odd happened. One word turned a pleasant conversation angry, and in a matter of moments James, the insensitive, uncharismatic, heartless git he was dared to yell at her. Lily had screamed back, and fled in tears. His heart broke immediately. It was so much like their encounter that ruined there lives. He would almost feel for Potter, if he hadn't deserved it...the bastard.
He could of told James where to get off, but that would be a waste of time. Immediately, he took after Lily. He knew her well enough to know where she was headed. Or, one of a few places. His instinct was to go check the towers, so he flew up the flights of staircases to find her.
Sure enough, there she was. Her tears stained her cheeks, and she still looked lovely as ever. Lily was like a fallen angel, who'd lost the ability to fly. This image sent another knife through his heart. She was curled up into a ball, pressing herself against the wall. He walked over sat down on the cold stone, wrapping his arms around her. She was just so fragile,right now, like a little porcelain doll that could fall apart in a moment. If she was upset in the dungeons, it was nothing compared to this.
He stroked a bit of her hair, pulling it the most of it back out of her face. "Shhh...it's alright Lily, i'm here now. You can cry as long as you want...I won't leave." One thing he knew, if that bastard or anyone else hurt her, he would always be around to pick up the pieces, and put them back together as that lovely girl.

Her tears muffled at a sound. It was the sound of an unwanted person though. No, she knew the sound of his footsteps by heart. When she felt his arms wrap around her, she could have started crying all over again. Why was she doing this to herself? She could have James or she could have Severus but she couldn't go on with this stupid little charade of going back and forth between who she loved. She was only hurting herself and both of them more. "I'm s..s..sorry." Lily tried to catch her breath. "You shouldn't have to see me cry Sev. I hate fighting with people. I really do." She murmured, feeling a little too at home in his arms. Why did she feel so at home there? Was it because he was her best friend or because she knew she'd always loved him?
"If I tell you something, do you promise not to hate me?" Lily whispered through her tears, trying to erase the entire night to make her confession. Would this only leave the tow of them more crushed than ever? Suddenly, Lily wished she'd not said anything at all. Maybe she didn't need to know if he cared for her that way. Maybe it was more important to stay with James. Maybe it was what the Wizarding World wanted, needed of her. Did she really want to spend the rest of her life knowing though? What if Severus did love her? Then what would happen? Would they run off together and forget what anyone else had to say? Did she even want to ask him outright? That seemed too strange, too foreign a questions to ask. How could she bring herself to say it?
She couldn't handle that type of pressure. Instead, Lily leaned her head up to look into Severus Snape's dark eyes. She wouldn't ask anything. She need not. Severus was her friend and he wouldn't hurt her. "I love you Severus." Lily murmured like it was a dark secret she'd kept hidden all her life. She tilted her head to gently kiss his cold lips. It was such a careful, delicate moment. She didn't know if he loved her in return. She didn't know if this forbidden kiss was safe by even his standards. What would he do now?

Lucius smiled to himself as he climbed the stairs to the astronomy tower. 'Aphrodite's going to love this,' he thought to himself as he grabbed the picnic basket he'd hidden behind a statue earlier in the day. He'd told his date to meet him up in the tower in a half hour for a special surprise. He wondered vaguely if she was having a good time at the ball with all her friends just as he began to climb the last flight of stairs
Suddenly he heard a noise above. Straining to hear, he recognized the sound of a woman's crying. Taking in the last few steps silently, Lucius payed careful attention to every noise he heard, now curious to see who was up here. Quickly, he dashed past the doorway and into a niche in the wall that couldn't be seen from the balcony or even the staircase at night, but it did supply him with a great view of Lily and Severus - and their kiss.

``for one so small, you seem so strong. my arms will hold you, keep you safe and warm.
"You shouldn't blame this whole thing on yourself Lily, remember? It takes two people to fight. And you didn't start it, I saw." Okay, so he wasn't exactly certain that Potter was the one that started the whole thing, as he was too far away to hear clear enough. But really, how could Lily of started it? She had been looking forward to this for a very long time, spent forever picking out a pretty dress with Serenity and Alice. It must have taken some effort to do her makeup on special. Apparently Logan was good at that sort of thing. And even though he knew nothing about makeup, he had to agree that it accented the perfect green of her eyes. But anyway, his best friend could have started the fight, but the facts didn't really add up. "And you've got a right to be upset about it sometime, love." he whispered to her, like he was telling her a story. Was it selfish to want to hold her like this forever, or if not that long, just a bit longer? Merlin. How on earth could he hate her. If only she knew how utterly rediculous she sounded at that time. He didn't care though, he didn't mind whether she was acting like a snob, or a naive little child, something he didn't really like tolerating...in anything other than the red-head pressed up against his chest. She was warm, and it was like the cold emptyness he had felt when he had said those terrible, awful words and could have ended their friendship forever. But Lily? Lily, the selfless, beautiful angel she was, forgave him. She didn't have to, he didn't deserve it at all, but they did it anyway. But here they were in the tower, with her tear-stained cheeks and broken heart, and who was to blame? Potter. "Silly, Lily." he said gently to her. It was a childhood nickname. At first, she had thought it an insult, but after a good half hour of trying not to smile, as he did the most childish of things, she forgave him, and the nickname served as a wonderful memory. "I could never hate you." There was a small moment where Severus came into realization. What could Lily of done that she would think that could lead him to extreme emotions? Maybe she was about to tell him that she still loved James, and thought if they talked about this, everything would work itself out. Fantastic. Oh god....he hoped not. I love you SeverusWait...did she really just say that? Ah yes, this must have been another way for fate to pick on him. He would wake up in his matress in the cold dungeons in a moment now, and realised it was only the biggest desire of his heart. It certainly wouldn't ve been the first time he truly knew what loneliness was. "Lily...I..." No. He wouldn't let his dreams do that to him again. It was rediculous, at he just wished they would stop taunting him. But then, something very different happened. He felt Lily's war, soft, and pink lips press up against his own. He could actually feel it! And that was when he knew, with positivity, that this wasn't a dream. It was a wonderful, blissful, perfect, reality.

&& these are the ways the world taunts us...
Just a kiss. Just a small moment as ice crept through her body and electricity coursed through her veins. Lily Evans could feel the coolness of Severus as he sat so still, so careful himself. Both seemed so frozen but for that beautiful, careful moment of silent perfection. How could such a moment be described as perfect when there were so many things wrong with it? Lily had let all of the bad things slip away to nothing. James was out of her mind, the ball, the night. None of those things seemed to matter in that fleeting moment of dangerous love.
She couldn't move away from him. Something so gentle and careful could be more easily. Lily leaned forward a tiny bit more and placed a hand on Sev's cheek. She kissed a little more fiercely. She kissed him like she'd meant it with every fiber of her being. Every second of every day that had passed so far in her life had been building up to that moment and Lily needed it to last because she knew, as soon as she broke away, life would not be able to stay that way.
She let the feelings overwhelm her entire body. She felt so real, so alive, as though she were opening her eyes for the very first time in life. When she did just that and physically opened her eyes, colors seemed brighter. Severus and his pale skin and dark eyes felt so woven into the fabric of her mind. He would stay there forever, entranced in her kiss. There was something so captivating about the look on his face, as if he loved her too. As if he had been waiting for the moment for so long too. Her perception of him had changed. He was so different with that look on his face.
And then, as if some force inside her knew it was time to end such a perfect moment, she pulled away. She moved away from him for a moment and put her fingertips to her lips. "Say something." She whispered, not quite a demand but definitely not a request. She needed him to say something. He had to, she needed him to.
Just then, Lily heard a subtle sound and wondered if someone was watching. She jumped back, away from Severus father. Lily felt anxiety creep through her. That wasn't normal. She wasn't an anxious person. Where was that coming from? Was there something for her to worry about in that tower? Maybe it was because she feared Sev's reaction so much.

A nice calm scenary was all she need now. So Serenity chose the tower out of all her other options. The excitment was still rushing through her head from the ball, it was a huge part of her life, a part she was never going to forget. Serenity felt a little dissapointed that Yule ball felt so short, yet it was so long. At least there will be other ocassions like these, but far long from today. At that thought she gave a little miserable sigh.
Serenity reached the last few steps of the spiral staircase and sat on the last stairs there are. She looked through the windows right across from her and smiled at the black inky sky filled with glittering white spots and of course her favourite crescent moon was there shining brighter then the rest. The calm and peaceful evening didn't last long, not until she heard voices that sounded like it was leading from the balcony. Serenity tried to make out the voices, Severus! It was always easy to make out his voice, and the other, Lily?! Is she crying? She couldn't believe her ears so she decided to take a good look for herself. Serenity sneaked behind a statue along the wall oppisite the balcony. Just when she took a peak she saw Severus and Lily kissing.
Serenity looked away and remained behind the statue, keeping her hands on her mouth so she wouldn't gasp from shock. What?! Why?! How?! When?! These were the questions that haunted her now. Serenity was petrified, she didn't want to believe this, she wish she had never came here on this night to see all this. There was a feeling of confusion, betrayal and sadness in the air, but shock was the one she felt most.

'Snape and Mudblood Evans? Huh, why am I not surprised?' Lucius smirked as he watched the scene, thinking of how devastated Potter would be to know his girl was up here snogging a Slytherin. A part of him wanted to go to the balcony and scare the wits out of the pair sitting there, perhaps even make a few nice deals in the process. But he held back when he say Serenity coming up the stairs. No need to get another Gryffindor involved. Besides, if the Marauders ever found out, he'd be toast. No, best to wait until Snape was alone, then set his terms. His smirk widened into a grin as he continued to watch the sixth-years, thinking all the while of what Severus might do to keep his little love affair off of the bulletin board.

``i want you more than ever now, but i know I can't have you..
It was a soft, gentle moment shared between the two companions. It was the single most perfect moment of his sad pathetic little life. And then, in an instance it was made perfectly wonderful. It didn't matter that he never kissed anyone before, it didn't matter that he was just as inexperienced as the first years were. He was in good hands now, with Lily Evans, his one true love. He'd known that if he couldn't have her, he'd might as well suffer alone for the rest of his life. Their lips molded together, as if the each of them were made for it. If an artist had crafted them, it couldn't have been any more of a perfect fit. He was so lucky, the luckiest young man in the world. It didn't matter about his teasing. It didn't matter about those stupid marauders. He was up in the astronomy tower kissing Lily. Lily Evans! He kissed her back. It really didn't matter if he hadn't done it before. She made him feel like he'd been doing it his whole life. They pulled back, for what could of only been for air. He was in a sort of daze. A sweet wonderful blissful fog of the mind. He didn't want it to end. This was the best Severus Snape had felt in his entire sixteen years. "Wow." was all that surpassed his lips, which were now warm from Lily's lips being pressed up against his own for so long. "Wow." he repeatedly lamely. The whole image was etched in his mind, the place, the stars, and the beautiful girl in front of him [/blockquote][/blockquote]
